Working in conjunction with the FIA Institute and Sensorcom, EM Motorsport developed a ‘nano board’ that allows a 3 axis accelerometer to be positioned deep inside each of the driver’s ear canals thereby giving the best possible measurement of the forces being experienced by the head during normal driving and should the worst happen, during an accident.

The devices were developed using a combination of in-house F1 comms system knowledge and know-how from Sensorcom, a leading provider of F1 ear pieces, such that they can be mounted in the driver’s normal radio ear pieces without adding extra bulk, discomfort or complex wiring. The system uses a CAN interface such that the data can be recorded by the existing on car logging systems.

The system developed by EM also gives the possibility to add further sensors in the ear such as 3 axis gyros.
